Healing Safely: Navigating Water Chemicals When Showering After Surgery

Greetings! I can’t believe it’s Wednesday already! Did anyone watch the Masters over the weekend? For some reason, that golf tournament always signals the start of spring for me.  Maybe it's the blooming azaleas?!

In addition to watching the Masters and the Florida Gators Women’s Tennis Team, I did find time to scroll through Instagram once or twice!  I was drawn to an article in the Post and Courier about chemical contaminants in the Charleston water supply.  According to the article, our water meets current EPA standards with regard to chemical levels, but would not meet the standards that will go into effect in several years.  This article sparked my interest since chemical contamination may have links to diseases including cancer and ALS.  The best recommendation is to place a filtration system on your home water system since switching simply to bottled water poses another problem with all of the plastics.

The PandC article also reminded me of other concerns that have been raised in recent years about bacteria levels in Charleston, including the water supply of area hospitals.  This concern sparked recommendations such as refraining from showering for extended periods after surgery.  However, this was countered with concerns that avoidance of bathing in itself could lead to increased post-op infection rates.  I currently advise patients to restart showering 48 hours after surgery, which allows an incision to seal (however, it is important to remember that the closure at this 48-hour mark has not had time to strengthen).  I combine this instruction to use antibacterial soap both before and after surgery and to avoid swimming in our waters until receiving medical clearance to do so.  I know I grew up hearing that the salty ocean water cured all, but sadly, not so much anymore.

That being said, the weather this week has been perfect for a walk on the beach!  As the weather warms, it's important to remember the sunscreen!  We have no new specials this week, but we have some ongoing specials on products for the month of April, so it's a good time to stock up!  I hope you enjoy the rest of the week.  For any of you golf enthusiasts, the Heritage Golf Tournament in Hilton Head starts tomorrow, and it's always a great experience! And it wouldn't be a blog without ending with a music video.  I hope you like this apropos classic!

'Til next time,

Heidi Williams
